About Voices From the Edge Festival
VFE was created in 1997 to bring the works of artists performing at the grassroots level and in out-of-the-way places—schools, churches, cafes, shelters, prisons and neighborhood outreach centers—to the attention of the larger public. The writing and performances speak to the many issues confronting African Americans today and the work is infused with a strong sense of purpose and connection to the community. For the past twelve years VFE has presented over 70 new works: plays, spoken word performances, one-person shows, ensemble and theatrical dance pieces, and dynamic poetry jams—all demonstrating the cutting-edge creativity and diverse voices of African American artists. Notable writers/performers/directors who have participated in the past include OBIE-winner Stephanie Berry, Lynda Gravátt, Ted Lange, Marcella Lowery, Novella Nelson, Petronia Paley, and Seret Scott, among others.
